As an organization, we are committed to creating long-lasting change through policy advocacy on a number of issues connected to our various programs and departments. We believe that people most impacted by any given issue should be involved in shaping policy that affects their daily lives and our campaigns reflect the needs and priorities of our constituents. Some of our policy initiatives include participation from our entire organization, and others are led by specific teams. Much of our policy advocacy occurs locally in Stockton, while we also travel frequently to the State Capitol in Sacramento to educate policymakers, amplify the voices of marginalized residents, and join forces in solidarity with our local, regional and statewide partners. We often work in collaboration with program participants to identify important advocacy issues, partner with policymakers to craft legislative language for bills and fact sheets, provide public comment and testimony during hearings, and mobilize impacted communities for rallies and demonstrations. We were also involved in a literacy lawsuit led by Public Counsel representing students and their families from schools in Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) v. the State of California Dept. of Education. See below for more information on the policy priorities of each department.
